Our eye tests

Have your eyes tested by optometrists that educate our future optometrists in an optometry clinic like no other. Flinders Vision is a state-of-the-art optometry clinic with huge range of the latest equipment in one location.

Our appointments average 45 minutes to an hour because we believe that getting to know you is the key to finding the best solution for your visual needs.

The clinic is in a quiet location on the Sturt Campus of Flinders University with easy access and parking and standard appointments are bulk billed.

 

General clinic

In short: The essential eye test for all people

For: Everyone

Description: This eye examination involves investigations carried out at various distances to help identify issues with day-to-day vision, and includes professional advice on eye health as well as options to address any visual requirements. These investigations are designed to detect the presence of glaucoma, cataract macular degeneration and other concerns with the health of the eyes.

Time: 20 to 30 minutes

Cost: Bulk billed for eligible Medicare and OSHC cardholders. Fees may apply for imaging if required.

Diabetic Eye Clinic

In short: An examination to detect and monitor eye health related to diabetes

For: Anyone who has been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus or is considered at risk of developing diabetes mellitus.

Description: A comprehensive examination of the health of the eyes and vision. It is recommended that retinal photography and macular optical coherence tomography scans be performed in a comprehensive eye exam. Unfortunately, changes to the eye health and vision can occur even when the diabetes is well controlled.  For this examination it is necessary to dilate the pupils, so ideally bring sunglasses and have some one to drive home.

Time: 90 minutes

Cost: Bulk billed for eligible Medicare and OSHC cardholders. Fees may apply for imaging if required.

Autism Centre

In short: A sensory friendly eye health service

For: Children and adults on the autism spectrum

Description: We are a Autism SA approved provider and this is the first optometry service of its kind in Australia

  • The waiting room and tailored consulting room are autism-friendly, with toys that are very tactile, with order and visual cues, so that children have their own space and feel a sense of belonging.
  • Consultations aim to make a visit to the optometrist a more positive and anxiety-free experience for those on the spectrum by tailoring the consultation to the communication level of the individual.
  • The Flinders Vision Autism Centre is run by Flinders University Optometrist and senior lecturer, Dr Paul Constable. Paul has a personal connection to the condition, with his son on the autism spectrum. Paul is passionate about providing services that aim to improve the lives of those with ASD.

Glaucoma examination

In short: An investigation to monitor, co-manage and treat Glaucoma. 

For: People who have been identified in the general clinic as being at risk of glaucoma (whether that be clinical findings or a strong family history of glaucoma) or who have already been diagnosed with glaucoma.

Description: The examination is an investigation of the clinical signs of glaucoma, which may include automated visual fields, pachymetry, optical coherence tomography, stereo optic disc photography and applanation tonometry.

Time: 60 minutes

Cost: Bulk billed for eligible Medicare and OSHC cardholders. Fees may apply for imaging if required.

Cataract examination

In short: An investigation to monitor the development of cataracts and discuss the level of visual disability being experienced

For: People who have been identified in the general clinic as experiencing some level of visual disability due to cataract or who have already been diagnosed with cataract.

Description: The examination is an investigation of the symptoms of cataract, which may include a glare testing, contrast sensitivity and documentation of the cataract.

Time: 30 minutes

Macular degeneration examination

In short: An investigation to monitor macular degeneration and advice on the condition

For: People who have been identified in the general clinic as having changes to the macular, who have a strong family history of macular degeneration or who have already been diagnosed with macular degeneration.

Description: The examination is an investigation of the clinical signs of macular degeneration, which may include optical coherence tomography and retinal photography.

Time: 30-45 minutes

Kids vision

In short: A child friendly eye test

For: Children of any age

Description: An investigation of a child’s eyes and vision which is personalised to the presenting concerns, age, and ability of the child.

Time: 15-45 minutes

Low vision examination

In short: A low vision test run in conjunction with the RSB

For: Any person who has a significant vision loss and a referral from an ophthalmologist or optometrist.

Description: Flinders Vision partners with the Royal Society for the Blind to provide a full range of services without the need to travel to the Low Vision Centre (LVC) in Adelaide. The clinic will provide specialist vision assessment to help determine which low vision aids are able to help people maintain their independence. This clinic can also supply a large range of day to day living aids such as talking clocks, UV shields and magnifiers. Learn more

Contact lens examination

In short: Examination for the purpose of fitting, delivery and maintenance of any type of contact lens

For: Existing contact lens wearers or people considering contacts.

Description: Whether you are already a contact lens wearer or are considering contact lenses for the first time, we can provide professional advice to ensure the correct type, fit, prescription, use and care of lenses for your eyes and lifestyle. We can assist with fitting of lenses for Keratoconic patients, fitting for those interested in Ortho Keratology (vision correction using contact lenses), fitting of Mini-Sclerals for those with difficult to fit corneas and fitting of many other lens types.

Time: 45 minutes (for a fit), 30 minutes (for aftercare)

Cost: $100 for fit and teach and 6 months of aftercare, $40 for refit or aftercare.  Medicare may provide some coverage for these services, ask our friendly staff what coverage Medicare provides for you

Aviation eye and vision examination

In short: Civil Aviation Safety Authority approved eye test

For: Qualified and student pilots

Description: Our senior optometrists Jason Booth and Neil Murray are both CASA accredited Optometrists and can help with all civil aviation and Defence eye testing requirements. They can perform all testing relevant to aviation including an Optec 900 (Farnsworth Lantern style) test. For this examination, it is necessary to dilate the pupils, so ideally bring sunglasses and have someone drive you home.

Time: 90 minutes

Cost: $285

Sports vision examination

In short: Our eye test for sport specific requirements whether they be for vision, safety or both

For: Sports people

Description: Flinders Vision can help with all sport related vision enquiries including the provision of glasses for shooting, prescription masks for divers, glasses for snooker or billiards as well as the provision of custom eyewear for cycling.

Time: 30 - 45 minutes

Occupational vision examination

In short: Occupational vision screening and supply of appropriate eyewear in consideration of safety standards for your work place

For: People working where they are required to wear safety eyewear and/or the current eyewear does not provide the vision require for the present work task.

Description: For office work, we supply a wide range of occupational lenses that complement existing eyewear requirements or provide a solution for specific occupational requirements. For safety glasses, we provide safety glasses needed for most occupational needs. Our prescribed prescription safety eyewear complies with AS/NZS 1337.6:2007 and are available in various styles and sizes.

Time: 20-45 minutes

Cost: Up to $70. Medicare may provide some coverage for these services. Ask our friendly staff what coverage Medicare provides for you.

Neurological examination

In short: Investigation of acquired or congenital abnormalities with eye movements or visual fields

For: People with known issues with visual fields or eye movements and people with recent injury in which eyes or vision may have been affected.

Description: A considered investigation of the individual’s eye alignment, eye movements and visual fields. This may include a Hess screen, Bjerrum screen or automated visual fields.

Time: Up to 90 minutes

Cost: Bulk billed for eligible Medicare and OSHC cardholders. Fees may apply for imaging if required.
